A Psychotherapist with a Background in Medicine

I’m Edita Lorinczova, a registered clinical counsellor who supports individuals and couples in exploring the unconscious patterns shaping their emotional lives.

From Medicine to Meaning

Integrating medical knowledge with psychological depth

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in Hungary and worked in the pharmaceutical and clinical research industry, focusing on women’s health. These experiences taught me how profoundly our bodies and emotional lives are intertwined — and how suffering cannot be understood purely through biology.

After immigrating to Canada, I began preparing for the medical licensing process, but it became clear that what truly captivated me was not the practice of medicine itself, but the inner worlds of those who seek care.

I wanted to understand people beyond the medical model — to engage with the meaning of their suffering and their capacity for growth. Therefore, I completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) and shifted my focus fully toward psychotherapy.

This transition allows me to bring my medical understanding of physiology and neuroscience into the therapeutic process — offering clients a grounded, and deeply informed approach. Today, my work is shaped by both disciplines — the precision of science and the humanity of psychological inquiry.

My Approach to Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic, relational, and mindfulness-informed

Psychodynamic

My approach is grounded in depth-oriented and relational traditions. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, I seek to understand what lies beneath them — I invite an exploration of the unconscious — the patterns, defences, and inner narratives that quietly shape our lives.

Relational

I integrate a relational perspective that recognizes that our sense of self emerges through our relationships and develops in relation to others — how we are seen, understood, and responded to by others. In therapy, this awareness unfolds through the therapeutic relationship itself.

Mindfulness-informed

Mindfulness in my work is not about techniques but about cultivating awareness: guiding clients to listen inwardly, with honesty and compassion, even when it’s uncomfortable — an invitation to notice and stay with what arises, rather than turning away.

Every person’s readiness for reflection is different. My role is to meet clients where they are — creating safety for those who need grounding, and depth for those ready to explore more fully.

A Culturally and Globally Informed Perspective

Understanding experience within cultural, relational, and historical context

Having lived, worked, and volunteered in Eastern and Central Europe, Brazil, Indonesia, Lebanon, and Canada, these experiences taught me to approach every client with openness and humility — attuned to the diverse ways people make meaning, relate to others, and define wellbeing.

Cultural sensitivity for me is not a method but a mindset: being attuned to each person’s background, values, and language of emotion. My practice welcomes individuals from varied backgrounds, identities, and life experiences, offering a space where difference is not just respected but deeply valued.

Education and Professional Background

Academic training and professional experience that inform my clinical work

My education and professional path reflect a lifelong dedication to understanding the human condition — through the mind, the body, and the cultural and societal currents that quietly shape who we become.
